{"id":1712,"date":"2013-03-16T01:18:05","date_gmt":"2013-03-16T01:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stockmanship.com\/?p=1712"},"modified":"2020-08-16T12:25:16","modified_gmt":"2020-08-16T17:25:16","slug":"dog-wont-push-cattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stockmanship.com\/?p=1712","title":{"rendered":"Dog Won&#8217;t Push Cattle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Question: .<\/strong><\/em> . .I have a year and a half old border collie.\u00a0 When I started using him I was determined with this one to send and shut up and only push him to where I wanted him to go like Bud always said.\u00a0 This has worked well and he responds good and really goes around to the other side and gets them going but as soon as they start moving that\u2019s it.\u00a0 He just sits there and watches.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve tried just leaving him and once and a while he will move up but won&#8217;t push.\u00a0 Somehow he is just confused about what I want him to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 The other thing is that if I send him with another dog that knows what to do he is fantastic.\u00a0 I love his style. He keeps his head up and watches all over and doesn&#8217;t get hung up on any one thing to long. Doesn&#8217;t even have to stick right by the other dog either just gets to work.\u00a0 I just don&#8217;t want him to have to be dependent on another dog and maybe I started doing that too soon.<br \/>\n<em><strong>Answer:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid that I\u2019m not going to be any help with this question except to say that there\u2019s nothing wrong with working him with another dog at this point.\u00a0 Bud always liked to use two dogs on cattle.\u00a0 The cattle responded better and neither of them had to be nearly as rough to get the job done.\u00a0 We always had a lot of dogs.\u00a0 Of course, Bud tried to make each dog as near perfect as he could, but he was always willing to \u201ctake what each dog could give him.\u201d A year and a half isn\u2019t that old.\u00a0 I\u2019d think that if you worked him with another dog, doing actual work (not just training sessions) for a while until he actually got it in his mind what the complete job was all about he would start to realize that \u201cthe idea is to put the cattle through the gate\u201d or some such thing.\u00a0 Sorry I couldn\u2019t help more.<br \/>\n<em><strong>Comment: . . .<\/strong> <\/em>.
